SUPERMODEL GABRIELLE RICHENS LAUNCHES CHARITY SWIM
Gabrielle Richens launches charity swimathon. Model Gabrielle Richens has launched a charity swimming event to help cancer sufferers. She was surrounded by rubber ducks dressed in red coats at London's Chelsea club as Butlins announced it was taking over the sponsorship of the 17-year-old charity swimathon. The rubber ducks are set to join in some of the swimathon challenges by acting as lane dividers in some pools throughout the country during the swim for Macmillan Cancer Relief. The fundraising swim challenge will take place in 550 local pools around England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales between 17 and 23 March 2003. It aims to enlist 40,000 swimmers and raise over £2 million for charity. Eighty five per cent of the cash raised by the Butlins swimathon will go to Macmillan Cancer Relief, which supports people living with cancer. The Swimathon Foundation, established last year to give swimmers a more direct involvement with the way their sponsorship money is spent, will distribute the remaining 15% to smaller charities. Anyone wanting to participate can register online at Swimathon or by calling the Butlins Swimathon hotline on 0845 36 700 36. You can also pick up an entry form from your local participating pool.
