COOL NEW GADGETS GALORE AT TECH TRADE SHOW
Gadgets galore at US tech trade show Hundreds of new gadgets have been on display at this year's Comdex high-tech show in Las Vegas. The prevailing economic downturn has meant less exhibition space and fewer attendees than previous years. But there has still been a flurry of forward-looking devices from leading manufacturers. A handful of companies demonstrated their own take on the Microsoft-inspired Tablet PC. They are fully functional mobile computers with screens that can be written on with a pen-like stylus. NEC unveiled a prototype version of the stylus-operated devices that's less than an inch thick. Microsoft and ViewSonic showed a screen that works like a monitor when docked to a personal computer. When detached it can be carried throughout the house and written on much like a Tablet PC. National Semiconductor demonstrated a conceptual device called the Geode Extended Office. It is a fully functional Windows XP computer with wireless capabilities, crammed into the size of a 5-inch-by-7-inch framed photograph. Earlier in the week Fossil unveiled a prototype of a watch that doubles as a PDA running the Palm operating system.
