CANADIAN AIR FORCE - DAKOTA - STRANGE NOSE MODIFICATION!
The Canadian Air Force, when it was training crews for the CF-104, decided to modify three C-47 Dakota's by installing the nose and radar from the CF-104.
This allowed multiple "Scope Dopes" to go up at one time and stay longer... thereby getting more hands on time.
When the CF-104 was removed from service, the radar and internal workings were removed from the Dak's. But because they increase their airspeed by 10-15 knots, the decision was make to leave them on. Just had to add weight to compensate for the removed equipment.
The three aircraft were nicknamed; Pinocchio, Dollies Follies and Woody Woodpecker. This is Pinocchio on display at CFB Cold Lake, Alberta.
