AUSTRIA ISSUES WORLD'S FIRST CRYSTAL POSTAGE STAMP
Submitted by J, L, CR & TJ MORRISON The world's first crystal-coated stamp goes on sale in Austria next week. The stamps, created by Swarovski crystal producers, costs 7.50 euros and there'll be a run of 800,000 copies. They are being produced in conjunction with the Austrian postal service. The stamp is made out of paper like any ordinary stamp and the crystals are stuck on with a specially created glue. Swarovski have found a way to make the crystal-coated stamp withstand rough treatment in automated postal sorting machines. The surface of real glass crystal bears the Swarovski swan motif. According to spokeswoman Bernadette Larcher the stamps are then "ironed" to fix the crystals in place.
